Blind Hope

An unwanted dog. An emotional rescue.
Sometimes the life you save may be your own.

Laurie had her own shattered dreams before she came to work at Crystal Peaks Youth Ranch—the ranch of rescued dreams—where broken horses and broken children encounter healing every day. Reaching out to save a dog in need, Laurie soon realized that the dog was rescuing her.

An inspiring true story told through the engaging voice of Kim Meeder, Blind Hope reveals poignant life lessons Laurie experienced from her ailing, yet courageous canine friend. Despite the blindness of her dog—and her own heart—Laurie uncovered what she really needed most: authentic love, unconditional trust, and true acceptance, faults and all.

As Laurie and her dog, Mia, both learned to follow the lead of a master they couldn’t see, Laurie discoverd the transforming power of God’s selfless love even for imperfect and selfish people—and she experienced a greater love than she has ever known.

“Love is a bridge that stands firm through difficulties and connects one heart directly to another, not because of how it looks, but because of what it is.” -Kim Meeder, Blind Hope

My Review:

Warning: This book will completely change your life for the better and will require a healthy dose of tissues as well. This is the heartwarming story of Laurie Sacher who decides to adopt a dog one day without seeing the dog first. When she shows us the dog is not at all what she expected, she is reduced to half her body weight, has bad teeth and horrible breath and smells horrible. Yet deciding to leave the dog where she is, isn't something Laurie can do if she is being honest with herself. She decides to adopt this broken down dog because she can relate to feeling like a broken down person herself.

Over time, Laurie finds that when she spends time with her dog Mia, she discovers the life she has been missing with God is revealed to her in the time spent with Mia, from unconditional love and forgiveness to peace in the midst of a storm. Overtime, Laurie begins to see a parallel between her life with Mia and her life with God. I don't want to spoil the remainder but I can honestly say, this book has changed how I see my own personal relationship with God know and how I can live free from my emotions and be at peace with God.

I received Blind Hope by Kim Meeder and Laurie Sacher compliments of WaterBrook Multnomah for my honest review. I can't recommend this book enough to my fellow bloggers who love animals and want to experience a life changing relationship with God. I would easily rate this one a perfect 10+.

The Last Christian Giveaway

In the future, it’s possible to live forever but at what cost?

A.D. 2088. Missionary daughter, Abigail Caldwell emerges from the jungle for the first time in her thirty-four years, the sole survivor of a mysterious disease that killed her village. Abby goes to America, only to discover a nation where Christianity has completely died out. A curious message from her grandfather assigns her a surprising mission: re-introduce the Christian faith in America, no matter how insurmountable the odds.

But a larger threat looms. The world’s leading artificial intelligence industrialist has perfected a technique for downloading the human brain into a silicon form. Brain transplants have begun, and with them comes the potential of eliminating physical death altogether – but at what expense?

In the Last Christian, by David Gregory, this near-future science fiction thriller collides with thought-provoking religious themes to create a spell-binding, what if novel. The technology described in this novel is downright scary when you think of the reality of just how close we are to this becoming a nonfiction book. Being a fan of books like this one, it opens the possibility up to just what devastating effects man can have on the world when he tries to play God.

I received this book compliments of WaterBrook Multnomah Publishers and for those of you who love science fiction, Christian suspense thrillers, and this one will have you on the edge of your seat till the last page, literally.

Forget Me Not Giveaway and Review

Their elusive enemies took everything. Now they want more. Crossroads Crisis Center owner Benjamin Brandt was a content man – in his faith, his work and his family. Then in a flash, everything he loved was snatched away. His wife and son were murdered, and grief-striken Ben lost faith. Determination to find their killers keeps him going, but after three years of dead ends and torment, his hope is dying too. Why had he survived? He’d failed to protect his family.

Now a mysterious woman appears at Crossroads seeking answers and help – a victim who eerily resembles Ben’s deceased wife, Susan. A woman robbed of her identity, her life, of everything except her faith – and Susan’s necklace.

The connection between the two women mount, exceeding coincidence, and to keep the truth hidden, someone is willing to kill. Finding out who and why turns Ben and the mystery woman’s situation from dangerous to deadly. But will that be enough to save their lives and heal their tattered hearts?

This Little Prayer of Mine

I had the opportunity to receive this beautiful complimentary book from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishers called This Little Prayer of Mine by Anthony DeStefano. This is my first children’s book to review and I was captivated by the illustrations on each and every page detailing the prayers of a child and how it affects their relationships with God.

How God is there when it gets scary or when you are alone or even when you wonder just what to do, the book is filled with beautiful color pictures on every page set to a rhyme. Below is an excerpt from one page of this wonderful Christian children’s book.

“And when my heart is very sad, and tears roll down my face, please help me to be happy so a smile can take their place.”

I had the opportunity not only review it but to read it to my youngest daughter as well as my niece, and I couldn’t get the book back from my niece. She found something within the book that she wanted to hear over and over and even asked grandma if they could read it again before bedtime. What better way to encourage God’s presence and love in the simple prayers of a child? This is a must have for your permanent library and a wonderful gift for communion or Easter!

An Absence So Great

"JESSIE GAEBELE’S THOUGHTS AT TIMES behaved like a toddler’s: one moment they stayed safely hidden in the pump organ’s shadow, and the next minute they popped up to pull out all the stops, increasing in volume, shouting in her head, underscoring the aching loneliness that defined her days.

Today, as she stood in this men’s refuge permeated by the scent of oil and grease and gasoline, she flicked away those toddler voices. She had good reasons to be here. She was eighteen years old, it was 1910, and young women alone were going places they’d never gone before. She didn’t need to be embarrassed or afraid. Why had she come to Milwaukee if not to prove to herself and others that she could make wise choices and pursue a dream? One day she’d have her own photographic studio back in Winona, Minnesota, where her family lived. Her future beckoned, but she would return only when she’d proven to herself that she was in control of her heart.

“It might be best if you had your father look at it, Fräulein,” the proprietor cautioned.

“I’m not purchasing it for my father,” Jessie told him, a man her father’s age she guessed.

“Ach, I’m sorry. You look so young. Your husband then.”

Jessie took a deep breath. “It’s for my own use.”

The proprietor’s eyes widened. “Ah, well, do you have”—he looked over her small frame—“the stamina to make such a purchase? Riding an Emblem’s not like riding a bicycle or a horse, if you know what I mean.”

She didn’t know how to ride an Emblem or a Pierce or any other kind of motorcycle. She didn’t know where she’d learn or practice, or where she’d keep it once she figured out a way to afford the gas. But it was the perfect accoutrement, so much more distinctive than a certain kind of hat or a new pair of shoes. Jessie needed inspiration with fall closing in on her, the days soon shortening into long, lonely nights. Winter always made her dreary, and this first one away from her family promised to weigh her down like the pile of wool quilts on the bed that she no longer shared with her sisters." (Excerpt from Setting Things Right, Chapter 1)

I was completely lost in this historical fiction written by Jane Kirkpatrick set in the 1900's. Jessie Gaebele's a photographer who envisions herself as working for herself one day but until then is learning life can be very difficult for women in this period of time. I can envision everything from the dresses of the time, to the mannerisms and even the places and business mentioned. Ms. Kirkpatrick does an exceptional job at getting us acquainted with Jessie and her desire to become a self employed woman of the time, when that just simply wasn't done.

The book is laced with pictures that Jessie takes throughout her journey to discovering who she wants to be in life and that further draws you, the reader, into the story!

I was provided with the opportunity to review the book, An Absence So Great, compliments of WaterBrook Multnomah Publishers and must say I highly recommend this historical fiction book from Jane Kirkpatrick. Here Burns My Candle ~ Book Review

A Mother who cannot face her future.

A daughter who cannot escape her past.

Lady Elisabeth Kerr is a keeper of secrets. A Highlander by birth and a Lowlander by marriage, she honors the auld ways, even as doubts and fears stir deep within her.

Her husband, Lord Donald, has secrets of his own, well hidden from the household, yet whispered among the town gossips.

His mother, the dowager Lady Marjory, hides gold beneath her floor and guilt inside her heart. Though her two abiding passions are maintaining her place in society and coddling her grown sons, Marjory’s many regrets, buried in Greyfriars Churchyard, continue to plague her.

One by one the Kerr family secrets begin to surface, even as bonny Prince Charlie and his rebel army ride into Edinburgh in September 1745, intent on capturing the crown.

A timeless story of love and betrayal, loss and redemption, flickering against the vivid backdrop of 18th century Scotland, Here Burns My Candle by Liz Curtis Higgs, illuminates the dark side of human nature, even as hope, the brightest of tapers lights the way home.

If you love historical fiction, especially from Scotland, you will love this book as you get lost in the language of that time period. I felt as if I was completely transported back in time to witness the events from above and would highly recommend this book.

Start Here...Doing Hard Things Right Where You Are

I was ready to go out and conquer hard projects. Big responsibilities. Things far outside my comfort zone. I prayed for God to work through me in big ways. He answered me, but not quite in the ways I expected.

For instance, one night on the way home in a blizzard, my dad and I stopped for a few minutes to pick up some necessities at the store. I waited in the car and surveyed the nearly empty parking lot until my eye caught a lone car with a person scrapping snow. As I looked closer, I saw that it was an elderly lady trying to scrape off her car while leaning on a cane. She wasn’t making much progress because the snow was falling faster than she could wipe it off. I felt instinctively that I had to help her. I ran out with my scraper, and soon a few other people joined me in clearing off her car.

Nothing outwardly significant happened then, but this was the first time I had strongly heard God’s voice and responded to it. As I tuned in, I began to recognize His voice at other times. I sensed I should go talk to the girl who was crying in the bathroom at school – it turns out she was pregnant and needed help. Or that I should offer tips to someone who was trying out for the sports team – it turns out she needed advice on deeper areas of her life that she normally wouldn’t have opened up about.

What I have found out is that in order to do hard things and conquer big challenges, we need to be willing to listen to that little voice the Holy Spirit uses. The more you listen, the clearer it becomes. And in order to do the great things, you must first be a servant.

Those are the words of Elizabeth, 17, from Raymond, Maine who is finding out how teens can do things in their early years to bring glory to God. Often times however, they don’t know where to start or know how to get the results that they need.

This book, Start Here, from Alex & Brett Harris, is a great book for anyone looking to start making a difference in their lives to bring God glory. While the book is written for teens, I can see even adults learning from all kinds of concepts the book teaches, like how to fund raise, ways to get going when you feel stuck and keep going when you get discouraged, how to understand God’s will and glorify Him through your efforts, how to stand up for what you believe and many, many more ideas.

I received a complimentary copy of this book to review from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group and would highly recommend this book. If you would like more information on this book and where to purchase this book please click on the link below.

Raven's Ladder by Jeffrey Overstreet

A DEADLY MENACE IS BREAKING THROUGH THE GROUND. THE PEOPLE OF ABASCAR MUST ABANDON THEIR STONE REFUGE AND FLEE INTO VULNERABILITY IN THE FOREST. BUT THEIR KING HAS HAD A VISION…

Following the beacon of Auralia’s colors and the footsteps of a mysterious dream-creature, King Cal-raven has discovered a destination for his weary crowd of refugees. It’s a city only imagined in legendary tales. And it gives him hope to establish New Abascar.

But when Cal-raven is waylaid by fortune hunters, his people become vulnerable to a danger more powerful than the prowling beastmen––House Bel Amica. In this oceanside kingdom of wealth, enchantment, and beauty, deceitful Seers are all too eager to ensnare House Abascar’s wandering throng.

Even worse, the Bel Amicans have discovered Auralia’s colors, and are twisting a language of faith into a lie of corruption and control.

If there is any hope for the people of Abascar, it lies in the courage of Cyndere, daughter of Bel Amica’s queen; the strength of Jordam the beastman; and the fiery gifts of the ale boy, who is devising a rescue for prisoners of the savage Cent Regus beastmen.

As his faith suffers one devastating blow after another, Cal-raven’s journey is a perilous climb from despair to a faint gleam of hope––the vision he sees in Auralia’s colors.

I loved this book and found myself completely lost in this world with these amazing characters. If you love books like Lord of the Rings and the Chronicles of Narnia, than this is a book for you to read.

Lady Carliss and The Waters of Moorue

Listen then, to the tale of a great King who ruled the Kingdom Across the Sea, along with His Son and their gallant and mighty force of Silent Warriors. A ruler of great power, justice and mercy, this King, sought to establish His rule in the land of Arrethtrae.

All was well in Arrethtrae until the rebellion…for there came a time when the King’s first and most powerful Silent Warrior, Lucius by name drew a third of the warriors with him in an attempt to overthrow the Kingdom Across the Sea. A great battle raged until finally the King’s forces prevailed. Cast out of the kingdom and consumed with hatred and revenge, Lucius now brought rebellion to the land of Arrethtrae and bringing great turmoil to the land.

There are many warriors in this land of Arrethtrae, many knights who serve many masters. But the knights of whom I write are my brothers and sisters, the Knights of the Prince.

The Knights of the Prince are called to rescue countless souls, not only from the danger of sword and knife but also from those who would poison the mind and soul. It takes an extraordinary knight to take up the cause of the Prince and face such danger. Come and hear the tale of one who was willing…the valiant Lady Carliss!

Mother - Daughter Duet ~ Book Review & Giveaway

Mother-Daughter Duet
Getting to the Relationship You Want With Your Adult Daughter
By Cheri Fuller and Ali Plum

A Harmonious Relationship is Possible!

When your daughter was born, you had a thousand hopes and dreams for her…including that one day you’d be best friends.

But as life unfolds, even the best intentions go awry. There are so many challenges on the journey to adult friendship that the reality is fraught with friction and frustration. Thankfully, a harmonious relationship with your daughter is possible.

Written by a mother and daughter who have successfully navigated the minefield from distance and tension to acceptance and friendship, this book helps moms open wide the door of communication so that daughter want to walk through it. Filled with personal anecdotes and based on proven principles, each chapter offers timeless wisdom as well as a daughter’s perspective. Often these principles apply to daughters-in-law as well.

What I value most from this book is how the reader can view this, either from a mom wanting to secure that kind of relationship with her daughter someday or as a adult daughter looking for a way to secure that kind of relationship with her mother. I saw it both ways, initially from a mother with an upcoming adult daughter at 16 as well as how to repair the relationship I have currently with my own mom.

The principles in the book allow you to see things from both sides because you view it from a mothers side of things as well as how the daughter views that same situation. The book takes you through church attendance, communication, marriage, child birth, the empty nest and how moms fail to take care of ourselves long after our kids are gone. We never stop being moms!

A great book and one I would highly recommend to any one who is a mom, a daughter or in laws, to those that counsel relationships, it would be a valuable tool to use in making those relationships better.

I received this complimentary copy of this book from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group to review, and if you would like more information on how to obtain a copy of this book please click on the link below.

Dancing With My Father ~ Book Review

Dancing with My Father
How God Leads Us Into A Life of Grace and Joy
By Sally Clarkson

With so much sadness and so many daily burdens to shoulder, how do Christian women maneuver steadily through this journey of life with joy and peace of heart intact? What does it look like to be a woman filled with joy, every day, all the time, no matter what? In the deluge of all the stresses and disappointments in a fallen world, how does a mature Christian woman really walk in the power of the Holy Spirit? How does she face each situation with gladness, despite the relentless and demanding day after day, month after month, year after year things that would rob her of emotional and creative energy, such as chores, bills arguments, messes? Or how does she maintain joy in the center of more devastating troubles: a divorce, the tragic death of a loved one, a child who has a chronic illness or disability, rejection by family members, alcoholism and drug-related scars, a job lay-off?

For me, the times I struggle most to experience joy are when I feel an invisible finger pointing at my heart, accusing me of all my inadequacies: How can you be a Christian this long and still lose your temper or struggle with pettiness, entertain critical attitudes, fluctuate in your emotions, and in your walk with God? Guilt over disappointing God or others sometimes lurks in the recesses of my mind and hovers silently like a could over my subconscious soul. After all, I have been a Christian for many year, and am perceived as a mature leader, writer, speaker; shouldn’t I be able to conquer these obstacles with confidence and strength? Shouldn’t joy be a natural to me as breathing?

If you want to know more then you will want to pick up a copy of Sally Clarkson’s book Dancing with My Father. I couldn’t put it down from the time I started this because I felt like it was me reading my own words.

I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group for my review. You can find out more information about the book at the link below

Hear No Evil Book Giveaway and Review!

Hear No Evil

By Matthew Paul Turner

Imagine living in a Christian upbringing so strict that music is the only thing that allows you to experience a bit of freedom in your life. In Matthew Turner’s book, Hear No Evil, we get to experience from his perspective, what his life was like growing up in a strict Baptist home. Where all types of music except what was played in the church was off limits. How do you think this may have affected your life?

Matthew takes us through his decision to allow music in all formats to influence him from a godly perspective where he truly believes that God wants him to be the next Christian Michael Jackson. We see the struggles on how his family deals with this decision and how even Christian artists such as Amy Grant we viewed as worldly and not from God by his community.

This book was fun to read to see just how each and every style of music was viewed from different religious groups and how Matthew finally sees what God’s purpose was in his life using music along the way.

Author Bio:

Love and War ~ Book Review

Love and War
By John and Stasi Eldredge

Ever wonder if you married the right person? Do you honestly believe that there is someone out there for each of us, our soul mate, yet perhaps we may have missed the mark with our current spouse? If you are in the midst of a marriage struggle, possibility contemplating divorce or just wanting to strengthen your marriage, then you must read this book!

I got this book from Waterbrook Multnomah publishers at just the right moment in my current marriage. The thing I must say that I love about the authors is the way that they have put this book together really speaks to you like a close personal friend would. You can relate to their own situations and personal struggles that accompany each chapter. It makes you feel like you are not alone in your struggles. Even Christian marriages struggle. That was a relief to me!

Yet the advice that you find from chapter to chapter is truly simple yet mind blowing. It really feels as if God is speaking directly to you through the words in this book. My recommendation is to read this book with your spouse, a chapter at a time together, and really discuss what it means to each of you.

The book opens with the marriage of a couple, Daniel and Megan, and marriage vows unlike any you have heard from a minister, but one that literally brought me to tears, and one that you wish were given to every married couple. It is a very real look at just what the newly married couple is undertaking by committing to those vows.

If you think about it, the Bible begins with the marriage of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden and it ends with the marriage of the Lamb of God, so it is critical to realize just how important traditional marriage between a man and a woman and love is to God. The book is based on that perfect love story that is created the moment we enter our marriage with all the love that accompanies it, based in the heat of the war that the world wages against it. Makes sense doesn’t it. Why we all struggle at times in our own marriages? Its because we aren’t living in the Garden of Eden! We, like Adam and Eve, have fallen into our own sin filled world.

Too often praying together as a couple is something that we all must try to incorporate into our day no matter if we are doing it together or just individually, but in agreement knowing that your spouse if offering up that same prayer. The enemy will often try to distract you both from doing this. Yet if you can pray together it is the most powerful thing you can do to create a united front for your marriage, your kids, your love, your home, and your financial situations. Prayer offers a godly shield and protection around your marriage from the enemy and the fruit that comes from this one simple act will change your marriage and your relationship forever. It also provides a doorway of intimacy between a husband and a wife!

As you can see, I am completely sold on this book and I can honestly say it has changed my personal view of marriage from God’s perspective and the relationship I have with my husband now. I would highly recommend this book to any couple and what a great gift for Valentines Day or an anniversary. You will love it and want to make it a permanent part of your library. I received a copy of this book for review by WaterBrook Multnomah.
